How To Make A Command Block Say Something In Color

Steps

  1. 1

Place the Command Block. If you're making a map and/or want this concealed, you should hide this someplace flat. For this example, we will use the impulse command block.

  2. 2

    Open the Command Block.

    • Enter the following: /tellraw @a [{"text":"<insert text here>","color":"<color>"}]</color></insert>
    • This must be typed in as shown, otherwise it might not work. Replace the color/text with your variables.

  3. 3

After setting this command, the command block must be powered. To do this, simply put a stone button on the command block by shift-right clicking on it. ( Don't use the "Needs Redstone" button!)

  4. 4

Press the button. The command displayed above should show aqua text in chat.

Yes, but it requires putting a comma between each text line and brackets over the entire thing, for example: /tellraw @a [{"text":"First Text","color":"First Color"},{"text":"Second Text","color":"Second Color"}] You can have as many lines as you want.

  • Question

How do you get a command block?

    Community Answer

    Use /give (Your name) command_block. Don't use the ( )'s. Confused still? Use it like this: /give Sarah0017 command_block.

  • Question

If you have typed the color with any upper case letters, it will not be recognized by the game. The color you have chosen also might not be an available color, so try other colors to see if they work.

  • Question

    Dose this work on Mineplex?

    Minecraft Apple & MLP

    Minecraft Apple & MLP

    Community Answer

No. Most modded servers have plugins that allow you to format text by doing something such as "&6gold" to color chat. However, for most servers, you need to be a staff member/donor. Just doing /tellraw directly is also not do-able on Mineplex, as you need OP lvl 2 or higher.

  • Colors with spaces must be replaced with underscores (ex: dark_red)

  • You can also create colored text in chat on Minecraft servers if you have permission. Look on the Minecraft Wiki and search "Formatting Codes".

  • To add additional text to your message, use 'extra'. It will save the formatting you used along with give you abilities for extra formatting For instance: {"text":"You selected the color","color":"green","extra":[{"text":"green","bold":true}]} shows up as "You selected the color green".

  • /tellraw was added in 1.7.2, /title was added in 1.8, and certain features don't exist in 1.7 that do in 1.8 and higher. It is recommended to use this in the latest release/snapshot.

  • You can use the following colors (technical names):

    • black
    • dark_blue
    • dark_green
    • dark_cyan
    • dark_red
    • dark_purple
    • gold
    • gray
    • dark_gray
    • blue
    • green
    • aqua
    • red
    • light_purple
    • yellow
    • white
    • reset (Sets the color to white in most cases)
  • It is also possible to add formatting, by adding "<format>":true in the curly brackets, such as [{"text":"Bold","bold":true}]. This is still compatible with colors. A list of available formatting is shown here:

    • Obfuscated (rapidly changes the character to another character of its width)
    • Bold
    • Strikethrough
    • Underlined
    • Italic
  • It is also possible to have multi-colored text, one way being [{"text":"Aqua!","color":"aqua"},{"text":" Now red!","color":"red"}]

    • You can also add new lines by typing in \n.

  • If you are creating a map with lots of command blocks, be sure to test each command out to make sure the command will work.

  • It is important to remember your quotes! For instance, [{text:"Hi"}] won't work; instead use [{"text":"Hi"}]. In earlier versions, you could do this; however in new versions (1.9+), it won't work.

    • An exception to this is when entering a true/false value for a formatting value, such as [{"text":"Bold text!","bold":true}], which is perfectly valid code. Although extremely rare, numbers also don't need to be quoted (ex. [{"text":3.14}] is once again valid code).
